A Slippery Question: Lube - Part 1- J-Lube
I get a lot of questions about lube, especially which lube to use for more massive toys and fists. Everyone has their unique blend that can include Crisco, J-lube, Xlube, essential oils, waxes, and emulsifiers. It gets slippery fast.
And, depending on your toys, you may need to stay away from lubes made of certain materials.
In this post, I am focusing on J-lube and will answer the following questions:
- What is J-lube?
- What is J-lube best used for?
- How do I reliably prepare J-lube?
- Can I add scents?
- I finished, how do I clean this up?
What is J-lube?
J-lube is probably the most commonly used lube for people who like large toys and fisting. It comes as a white powder. When mixed correctly with water, it makes a very slippery water-based lube. Here is the manufacturer's (Jorgensen Labs) description: J-LUBE is a concentrated powder that dissolves easily in water and is a very effective obstetrical lubricant. J- LUBE is completely inert and non-irritating. 10 oz. plastic bottle with shaker top makes 6-8 gallons of lubricant. For veterinary use only!
What is J-lube best used for?
When properly mixed with water, J-lube creates a very slippery and viscous solution that provides excellent lubrication as well as an anti-friction protective layer that comes in handy during play. Because of these properties, J-lube is a good lube for toy play, fucking, fisting, and anything that requires a thick, long lasting lubricant. Because it is water-based, J-lube is safe to use on silicone toys, but it can also dry out, so make sure you mix a large batch so you can relube during you session.
How do I reliably prepare J-lube? Love
We get asked over and over again how to make J-lube, and while it is very simple to make, getting the right consistency requires following a recipe. Here are two methods that work well. You can always make it thicker (by adding more of J-lube powder) or thinner (by adding more water).
Take your clean lube bottle and fill it with 300 grams (or 10oz) of warm-hot water (roughly 60c or 140f).
Add 15 grams (or .5oz) of J-lube powder.
Shake vigorously for 30 seconds and open your bottle gently to release air. The J-lube mixture will create pressure when you mix it. It's a good idea to squeeze a bit of air out of the bottle before shaking. This will keep the lube from spraying out of the bottle when you open it.
Close the bottle and shake again thoroughly.
Wait for the mixture to cool down to room temperature and you are ready to go.
NOTE: This will make a pretty well mixed solution in a pinch. The longer you wait before use the fewer clumps you'll be left with in your mix.
Here I am using a small blender like a bullet, but anything similar works.
Mix the same amounts of water and powder as above (not hot this time) in your mixer container. Run it for about a minute. Put the mixed lube in your clean lube bottle. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, and you are ready to go.
Can I add scents to my lube?
Yes, you can! If you want to add some pleasant fragrance in your play, try adding 2-3 drops of essential oil into your mix. Try sandalwood, Jasmin, or bergamot. You may find the result pleasing for both you and your partner. Be sure to let your partner know if you've added anything to the lube to avoid an unintentional allergic reaction.
I finished, how do I clean this up?
Cleaning J-lube can be a bit tricky. I clean my toys and lube bottle using warm water, dish soap, and kosher salt.
The salt helps break the chemical bonds of the J-lube as well as provides some extra friction in the cleaning process.
I frequently run my toys and lube bottle in my dishwasher on the sanitize cycle. All my toys are made from platinum cured silicone so they can withstand heat up to 450 degrees fahrenheit.
A final word of advice, the right lube consistency and amount can significantly improve your play and make it safer, so don't skip on having good lube, and lots of it. When playing with others, it is a good idea for each person to have their own lube bottle to avoid passing STIs and to keep things hygienic.
